Here we have an extra special guitar from the extra special decade known as The ’70’s: a 1973 Gibson SG II. You don’t see many of these around and when you do, they are rarely as nice as this one.
In the early ’70s, Gibson introduced the SG I and SG II, which were budget versions of the SG Standard using various hardwoods, a fixed wraparound bridge/tailpiece and mini-humbucker pickups. They were only made from ’71 to ’76, and have become “sleeper hits” that fit into the “affordable vintage” category. The SG II itself was released at Summer NAMM ’72 and had some unique features: an alder body, smaller headstock angle and stripped down controls mounted on a plate. Through the ’70’s, less than 1300 were made in the Walnut finish, and not many have survived till now.
It has a contoured, solid alder body with a nice wood grain. But it’s the grain on the flame maple neck that really stands out – be sure to check out the photos. It has a slender profile that is very comfortable to play, and is topped with a nice rosewood fretboard and mother of pearl inlays. Interestingly, it has a 10″ radius. The neck is nice and straight, with a fully functioning truss rod. Despite it’s age, there is plenty of life left in the frets.
The guitar also features the original mini humbuckers, which sound amazing. These pickups are surprisingly versatile, great for both clean and overdriven tones. There’s a reason they’ve been favorites of many players. The guitar has a master volume and tone, and an on-off slide switch for each pickup.
This one is in great condition, considering it’s age – while there is honest player wear in the form of scratches, small dings and nicks, it doesn’t have any issues. The guitar has been vetted and setup to play perfectly by the techs in our shop. The original pickguard is long gone, but honestly, we think it looks better without it. The guitar comes with a Gibson case, which we think could be original, but may not be – so we’ve just listed it as a hardshell case (not claiming originality to it).
This is a super cool guitar that you won’t find very often – get it now before it’s gone!
